Human feedback on translations is the single most powerful quality factor. As such, we always ask new clients to give us feedback on our first translation projects by means of in-market review – an additional review cycle of the translation.

This review is carried out within your organisation by a qualified native speaker of the target language, who is familiar with the source language. Your reviewer is best suited to add subject and organisational knowledge to the translated content.

This type of structured feedback is key to building qualified language assets that add value to future projects. The goal is to weigh up the inherent cost and possible delay that may occur with the future improvements that grow from this initial review cycle.

Organisations with low prior exposure to localisation services can also use this review cycle as part of growing their own internal localisation maturity. It will help to set up and optimise processes necessary for ongoing and scalable localisation activities.

Why you should be doing in-market review

If you have the right competencies within your organisation, then you can create significant value by adding this step – in particular at the beginning of your relationship with your localisation partner.

You, as the content owner, will have had consistent exposure to company-specific terminology and style. You are also more familiar with the function of the translated content than translators. That means that an internal reviewer, appointed by you, can add a layer of knowledge which fine-tunes the final product and aligns it with your company.

The ultimate goal of this review cycle is for this knowledge to flow into and improve your Language Assets: style guides, glossaries, briefs, etc., and also qualify the new Translation Memory by having your approval.

If you have not yet developed any of these assets, we can offer advice on how to create and maintain them. Developing and maintaining these knowledge repositories has always proven to be insightful and, in the long-term, has optimised the entire translation process.

Until we reach that point, the review performed at your end completes the briefing and information exchange that is happening at the beginning of a project, by validating that the end result is in line with what was agreed.

There are several environments in which an in-market review can be executed:

  • on the published format of the translation.

It is best practice to use an integrated online review for a varietyof reasons:

  • Your reviewers will benefit from the same custom quality assurance features our own translators used when working on your content.
  • An online review aids consistency and it ensures completeness as the review is carried out in the context of the source content.
  • Your reviewers will have access to all terminology, concordance and translation memory resources and any changes they make will be stored for future reference.

The offline approach necessitates a series of additional steps that add inherent risks and downsides. We can further advise on the best approach once we know more about your translation requirements, your desired level of involvement and what you would like this review cycle to achieve.
