How technical is "technical"?
Here at Lingo24, we're often asked what is meant by "technical translation". The Oxford dictionary defines "technical" in several ways, but the two meanings which are perhaps most appropriate when it comes to translation are the following:
- relating to a particular subject or craft etc. or its techniques
- using technical language requiring special knowledge to be understood.
Both the above definitions have relevance when deciding whether to class a text as "technical". Thus technical texts can vary from a brochure containing a variety of specialist terms particular to a branch of trade or industry (e.g. a description of what goes on in a distillery!) to an article or paper featuring information impenetrable by anyone unfortunate enough not to have a degree in nuclear physics.

For example, if a translation into German requires knowledge of electrical installations, we'll look for a native German speaker with translation qualifications plus a degree in electrical engineering or at least many years experience of translating similar material. If the text is medically related, it will be allocated to a qualified translator with a medical training or background in addition to a language qualification.
