Stockbyte, the world's largest independent royalty free image provider, required the translation into French, German, Italian and Spanish of thousands of keywords that power the search function on their image database. Just to add to the challenge, each keyword is also associated with several synonyms, plurals and tense variations.

• in a word list translation what is the best way to handle the translation of a plural form when the singular of the word has already been translated?
• in a list which involves words only, the words usually appear out of context - however on Stockbyte's website, context is provided by the images associated with each key word. With this context being one of the fundamental quality drivers, a solution involving machine translation is unworkable. So what then is the best way to handle this pictorial context and ensure a consistent interpretation of each word across the four languages?
• the translations into the other languages need to account for additional word variations (e.g. gender). The extra variations change the basic structure of the data, so how do we ensure that translation lists are in a manageable format for both the translators and the database managers?
• what is the best way to manipulate almost 35,000 rows of words to ensure that each unique word is translated only once?
• long word lists can be very daunting for the translator. What is the best way to ensure that the translators (and proofreaders) work through the word lists as efficiently and accurately as possible?
