Content is translated using a Machine Translation tool and then edited by human editors.High volume added-value content (ideally created in controlled authoring environments), like technical documentation, knowledge baskets, Wikis, (e.g. non-verbatim website comments, internal correspondence, etc).
Post-Edited Machine Translation (PEMT) creates inexpensive, quick translations, by processing texts with a Machine Translation engine, and then having the result edited by professionally qualified, human editors. This ensures that the translations will be of a pre-determined quality.
The ideal scenario for PEMT is where a client has very large translation volumes of non-critical content, that add value in other language markets when translated. The ideal audience for PEMT translations would appreciate that the translated content may not be polished, but will be accurate and reliable.
Source texts should be written without spelling mistakes and using reasonable grammar, to minimise ‘no-translation’ issues. If parts of the text are not translated, this will slow down the post-editing process and the advantages are lost.
PEMT may be suitable for large projects in certain language combinations with tight deadlines, where there isn't time for a full human translation and style is less important.
It may also be suitable for high volumes of fast, non-business-critical documents, where the reader of the translated document needs to reliably understand the gist of the document (e.g. internal communications and emails).
In some cases, clients may decide that a PEMT translation is useful for some of their content, but that other content needs to be translated by professional translators. We are happy to help in this decision process.
Lastly, MT engines can be customised to a client’s need by using existing translations within a specialised subject environment. This will lead to even better MT results for large quantities of documents and texts that can be post edited by professionally trained editors. Typical scenarios for this deployment are technical manuals, technical web content and subject areas with relevant technical terminology.
Translations that would not be suitable for PEMT include texts for an audience where quality is essential, stylistic or creative text (e.g. marketing collateral), or texts with highly technical terminology (e.g. legal contracts, instruction manuals) that the translation memory tool has not yet been trained to recognise. Low volume projects will also not see the benefits of PEMT.
