Lingo24 and XML-INTL welcome you to XTM

In our last newsletter we gave you a glimpse into the world of Translation Environment tools. We explained how such a tool can potentially improve the quality and the turn-over time of a translation project and what implications this has on the cost of translations. So you know now about Lingo24's reasons for teaming up with XML-INTL to develop the XML-based Translation Environment tool that is second to none. In this article, we'll tell you more about the tool that combines the best of both XML and the Translation Environment genre to create our own solution: XTM.

Scalability

One of the outstanding features of XTM is that it is an extremely scalable TM tool for supporting professional translation services. All formats involved are industry standards and are based on XML. It can be adopted in a such a way as to link directly with almost any Content Management System. When jobs have to be translated, the project can be prepared automatically using the kind of Translation Memory technology explained in the last article. Translators work in an intuitive Java translator interface, or alternative workflows can be created. At the other end of the scale, XTM might even be a central part of a hosting solution for your multi-lingual CMS.

Integrated solution

Those features make XTM an essential tool for the translation process, because they enable XTM to manage key tasks in terms of formatting, knowledge management and quality assurance. This means that XTM integrates TM technology into a standardised but extremely scalable translation workflow - in particular for single source text. At the same time it increases productivity and supports the translator.

Behind the scenes

XTM is indeed a complete Translation Environment tool that offers more than meets the eye. The "invisible features of XTM are the ability to directly link to CMS. It will receive flagged text for translation to pre-process it. After segmenting and preparing the text for translation, it runs a comparison of the translatable segments with any legacy material in previously translated documents and existing translation memories. It then processes all data found and calculates the project parameters and cost. The next step is to prepare all necessary data for the translation and to pre-translate the source text based on the Translation Memory content and all legacy translations.

The frontend: XTM's translation interface

XTM's "visible" key features are designed to support the translator. XTM's intuitive user interface integrates numerous functions. It displays the segmented source text and also displays and facilitates the processing of different TM matches (guaranteed, 100%, fuzzy and internal repetition. This is achieved by displaying each translation unit including all necessary admin information to the translator. XTM also allows previous translations to be mined for useful data. On a terminology level, XTM supports the translator by processing and displaying existing terminology entries. The translation interface also supports spellchecking using customised dictionaries and Quality Assurance functions like the checking of numbers and dates.

XTM's user interface will also be utilised for checking and editing processes and for query management. Because all functionalities are XML-based, XTM will take care of a seamless delivery of all necessary data - including the Translation Memory.
