Urdu is a member of the Indo-Aryan group of languages and is the official State language of Pakistan (along with English) and also that of the Indian States of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Fiji (as Hindustani).

There are some 130 million native Urdu speakers worldwide, with a further 120 million second language speakers.

Urdu is a standardised subset of Hindustani; a collective term for the sister languages of Hindi and Urdu. Within this wider Hindustani family there are collectively 904 million speakers worldwide. Urdu differs from Hindi only in that it has a heavier influence of Persian and Arabic vocabulary and that Urdu uses a Perso-Arabic script for its transcription.

There are four recognised dialects of Urdu; Dakhini, Pinjari, Rekhta and Modern Vernacular Urdu. Modern Vernacular Urdu is spoken around the major Indian and Pakistani cities of Delhi, Lucknow, Karachi and Lahore; it is the least widespread of the four dialects and is somewhat divergent from ‘pure’ Urdu as its daily usage omits many of its Perso-Arabic vocabulary. Dakhini is generally found in use in the Indian City of Hyderabad and the Indian States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnatka, and Tamil Nadu, whilst Rekhta is considered the language of poetry and a separate subset of the linguistic group.
