Tibetan Translation Services
Tibetan is a member of the Tibeto-Burman family of languages and is spoken primarily in Tibet but also in bordering regions of India, Bhutan, Pakistan and Nepal. There are reckoned to be just over 6 million speakers worldwide.
The Tibetan language contains several distinct dialects which are often not mutually intelligible, in addition the boundary between what does and what does not constitute a Tibetan language is often blurred; reflecting perhaps the absence of an exact delineation between the borders of countries of the Himalayas.
Tibetan is written in an Indic script that is thought to have been derived from the Sanskrit Devanagari script. In the areas of Northern Pakistan that contain ethnic Tibetans, however, this script fell out of use with the arrival of Islam. At that time it was superseded by a Perso-Arabic script. In recent times though there has been a revival of the older Indic script.
