The Thai-Kadai family of languages, of which Thai is a member, are thought to have originated in Southern China and indeed Thai does share some characteristics with Chinese. Thai is a tonal language, meaning that tone of voice is used to distinguish words; grammatical functions are tricky to pick up on and its distinct phonology is not instinctively obvious to outsiders.
Thai is written in an Indic script that travelled to South East Asia in antiquity; the script was adapted by the Khmers to its present form and was then adopted by the Thais.
