Swedish, as a written language, first appeared in Gustav Vasa's Bible in 1540 and it went through a constant process of modernization until it became the standard Swedish spoken today. Standard Swedish was built mainly on the central Swedish dialects, dialects that are almost similar to the language varieties spoken in other regions of the country. Writers of the likes of Strindberg, Selma Lagerlöf and Gustaf Fröding contributed to the development of Swedish and chiseled it into becoming what it is called today ‘Modern Swedish’.
