Swahili or Kiswahili as it is called in the language itself is probably one of the most widely used and useful of the African languages. It is the mother tongue of the Swahili people whose natural homeland is the northern costal region of Africa, stretching from the southern portion of Somalia down to the northern portion of Mozambique…an area containing some 10 million people.
This purely geographical boundary, however, belies the true utility of the Swahili language. Swahili is actually the second language of a further 80 million inhabitants of East Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo; it is the lingua franca of East Africa as well as being the only official language of the African Union.
The specific countries that Swahili is spoken in are as follows: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Somalia, the Comoros Islands and Mozambique; this perhaps serves to illustrate the full importance of the language to anyone wishing to do business in Africa.
