Somali translation services
The Somali language is spoken by ethnic Somalis in Somalia and the bordering areas of Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti; however, there are also significant members of the Somali Diaspora in Yemen, North America and Europe. Somali has been the official language of Somalia since 1972 and uses the Latin alphabet for its transcription.
Somali contains three main dialectic groups within it; Northern, Bendaair and Maay and their distribution is mostly contained within discrete areas. Northern Somali forms the mainstay of Standard Somali and as the name suggests, has its hinterland in the northern areas of the country. Bendaair is generally found spoken in the country’s costal regions; (hence its alternative appellation of ‘Coastal Somali’) it has certain peculiarities not found in Standard Somali. Maay is to be found in the southern areas of the country.
