The Shona ‘nation’ is composed of different ethnic groups who primarily identify with one of two main groupings; the amaNdebele or the maShona groups. Within these groupings a variety of Shona related dialects are spoken. Somewhat fortuitously though, a standardised form of Shona, known as Banto, is used throughout Zimbabwe as the lingua franca.
