Norwegian Translation Services

The 4.7 million native speakers of Norwegian have had the chance to be born in what many economists consider the most prosperous European country. A member of the Scandinavian language family, the roots of the Norwegian language go back to the time of Vikings and Old Norse. Modern Norwegian comes into two flavours: bokmål and nynorsk. The former is the main, literary language, spoken mostly by the upper social classes and it is also the language taught to most foreign students. Nynorsk is more of an artificial language built in the 1800’s on several Norwegian dialects with the sole purpose of having a nationally relevant language that would not resemble Danish to such extent as bokmål. Being a rather cosmopolite language, Norwegian accepts foreign influences and is willing to borrow words from several languages, especially of Germanic origin; these words coexist peacefully with the ancient Viking words, forming a language that can be defined as both ‘classical’ and ‘modern’.
