Lithuanian Translation Services

Lithuanian, together with Latvian, constitutes the extant Baltic group of languages, part of the Indo-European language family.

Lithuanian appeared as a written language rather late, in the 16th century, only to be banned by the Russian Governor General of Lithuania in 1864 together with the Latin alphabet. The ban was lifted in 1904 and it was followed by a linguistic reform led by Jonas Jablonskis, who contributed immensely to the development of the modern Lithuanian language.

Lithuanian is thought to have retained some features of Proto-Indo-European and it is considered by many linguists the oldest surviving Indo-European language. At present, Lithuanian is spoken by approximately four million people worldwide, three million of which live in Lithuania.
