Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea, additionally; it is also spoken in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture which is to be found in the Jilin Province of North-eastern China. The language itself is thought to be either a member of the Altaic family of languages or else stands alone as an unclassified language; it is spoken by some 80 million people worldwide.

Within Korean, there are several distinct dialects The three main dialects are the dialect spoken around Seoul, which is the main dialect of South Korea; the dialect spoken around Pyongyang, which is the main North Korean dialect and the Jeju Island dialect. The first two are perfectly mutually intelligible, the only difference being one of stress and intonation; the Jeju dialect, however is so different that it is thought to be a completely different language in some quarters.

Korean, in ancient times was written in a Chinese script with a Korean reading, eventually this changed to the full use of Classical Chinese. In modern times a Korean alphabet is in use that is sometimes mixed with Chinese script to produce a Sino-Korean script; this practice though has been phased out over recent decades and now a purely Korean script is the norm for writing.
