Kazakh Translation Services
Kazakh is the Turkic language of the people of Kazakhstan. It is the official spoken language of the Republic; however, Russian is the official language of commerce there. Kazakh is further spoken all over the former republics of Soviet Central Asia; in such countries as Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan as well as in regions of Turkey, China, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Russia and Iran.
There are reckoned to be about 12 million speakers worldwide; slightly less than 10 million of which are within the borders of Kazakhstan itself, with a further 2 million within China, about half a million within Russia and the rest spread out amongst the communities of the wider Diaspora.
In the past, Kazakh was written in the Orkhon script; an Old Turkic script that in many ways resembled the runic alphabet. Modern Kazakhs now use a variety of alphabets dependent upon their location; within Kazakhstan and Mongolia, the Cyrillic script is used but Chinese Kazakhs use a form of Arabic script.
In 2007 the Kazakh Government looked into the feasibility of changing to a Latin script and it was concluded that this was, indeed feasible. Going forward, this is now looked upon as a path to integrating Kazakhstan into the modern global community.
