Hebrew Translation Services
Hebrew is the Semitic language that is spoken in Israel, where it is one of the two official languages there; the other being Arabic. It is spoken by around 6 million people in Israel as a first language and is in fact the de facto language of the State, as the majority there use it; Hebrew is spoken by a further 9 million people worldwide.
The Modern Hebrew, developed over many centuries; the first notable milestone in its development coming after the Jewish return from exile in Babylon; Biblical Hebrew was at that time gradually superseded in daily usage by localised dialects and a regional version of Aramaic. After the 2nd century AD, when the Jewish population were exiled from Jerusalem, Hebrew slowly ceased to be a spoken language but still retained its usage as a major literary medium. The current form of Hebrew developed during the Hebrew revival of the 19th century, when it was modernised by reformist intellectuals of the period.
Modern Hebrew is written from right to left; similar to the way that Arabic is written. The script used to transcribe Hebrew is derived from Aramaic and is the ‘square letter form’ familiar to many as characteristic of Hebrew; when written in the cursive, however, the letter forms can tend toward a markedly more rounded appearance.
