Dari, or Dari Persian as it is also commonly known, is the name given to the Persian language spoken in Afghanistan. Dari though, is not solely restricted to Afghanistan; it is also the regional language of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
In Afghanistan itself, Dari Persian is simply referred to as Farsi (Persian). Like all Indo-Iranian languages, Dari developed from Old Persian and the Avestan language of Zoroastrianism. Old Persian died out over a millennium ago but a survival was retained in Old Dari which was spoken up to the 3rd century BC; Linguistic developments and adaptations occurred over the centuries to give us modern Dari. Dari is thought in some circles to be a ‘purer’ form of Persian as modern Persian contains substantial elements of Arabic and Turkish influences, whereas the geographical isolation of the original speakers of Dari meant that there were far fewer outside influences upon the language.
Dari has a utility far wider than the borders of its heartland; Persian, or versions of it are spoken widely throughout the region and they are generally mutually understandable; Dari, in fact shares a common script with Persian and within that, spellings and grammar are almost identical; it is only the pronunciation that differs.
