Canadian French Translation Services
Canadian French is not, as is sometimes thought, a term denoting a single type of French spoken in Canada; it is actually a blanket term that covers several different dialects of French used in that country.
French is the first language of nearly 8 million Canadians; the main dialects of their language are as follows:
- Quebec French, which as the name suggests is spoken in Quebec. This is the most widely used Canadian French dialect; it is also the dialect that several other smaller dialects are versions of; these are the Ontario, Western Canada and Labrador dialects.
- Acadian French, which is principally spoken in the Canadian Maritimes; the Eastern Atlantic coast region; it is thought to be the ancestor of Cajun French.
- Newfoundland French; spoken, of course, in Newfoundland, it is a diminishing dialect.
