Of course, by this time the ascendant Portuguese had borrowed heavily from the languages that it had supplanted as well as from neighbouring tongues, thus forming the basis of modern Brazilian Portuguese.
The final consolidation of the language came during the latter half of the last century; there were still a great many different but mutually intelligible dialects at that time, however, the advent of widespread radio and television broadcasts helped to disseminate and popularise the local dialect of Rio, where these broadcasts originated from.
