Azerbaijani is a member of the Turkic language group and is the language spoken in Azerbaijan, Iran (in areas where Iranian Turks form a majority) and also in parts of neighbouring countries such as Iraq, Russia, Georgia, Turkey and the Ukraine; there are approximately 25 million speakers worldwide.
Azerbaijani is also known as Azeri or Azari; in the language itself, it is known as Azerbaycan Dili but interestingly it is called Turki by the Iranian Azerbaijanis. This fact is interesting because it reinforces the language’s link with its Turkic family origins but also because in actual fact the Azerbaijani language is mutually understood by other Turkic languages such as Turkish as spoken in Turkey, the Caucasus, Cyprus, the Balkans and Syria. The Azerbaijani language, though Turkic, contains a large measure of Arabic and Persian influence.
The script used for transcribing Azerbaijani has varied several times over the past century, however, it must be noted that the Iranian Azerbaijanis have always used and continue to use the Arabic script. Within Azerbaijan, the Arabic script was used up to 1929; after that a form of Latin and then a Cyrillic script was used, until 1991, when the modern Latin alphabet was adopted.
