Moving West toward the Midwest and the West Coast, accents differ markedly and this has been attributed to the fact that in these regions British linguistic influence was minimal and so the language was exposed to a greater mixture of other influences.
As the colonisation of the continent continued apace, an American lexicon gradually emerged; flora and fauna that were completely unique to the New World had to be named; native languages filled this role to a great extent, but so did borrowed vocabulary from languages such as French.
