It is the official language of Italy, San Marino and Vatican City, as well as one of the official languages in each the European Union, Switzerland, Slovenia, Somali Democratic Republic, and the Istria county of Croatia. The Tuscan dialect is the base of Standard Italian, which finds several dialects stretched between the languages of Southern Italy and the Gallo-Romance languages of the North. Italian is often considered to be the one most closely resembling Latin of the Romance languages in terms of vocabulary. Generally Italian can be related closely to the other two Italo-Dalmatian languages, Sicilian and the extinct Dalmatian. Those three make up the Italic branch of Indo European as a subgroup of the Italo-Western grouping of the Romance languages. Although Italian uses the Latin alphabet the 5 letters J, K, W, X and Y are not part of the standard Italian alphabet and only occur in imported words or in different dialects. The sounds represented by the letters, however, occur in Italian through the use of an equivalent spelling, using gi, ch, u, cs or s, and i.
