The Entrepreneur, April 2011
Lingo24's founder and managing director, Christian Arno, shared his thoughts with the Entrepreneur on exporting, VAT and "red tape" affecting international trade. He welcomed the government's plans to help exporters play their part in reviving the economy. He said measures such as lowering corporation tax, cutting red tape and extending the business rate relief "holiday" would be a boost to entrepreneurs.
He said making the UK attractive to overseas business made sense, but the other side of the coin is supporting the export sector. More practical help should be available to meet this goal.
He said: "They have to make people more aware of how easy and low-cost it is to export... We always hear about the problems associated with exporting — like issues with delivery, legalities and taxes etc — but I can't remember hearing the government promoting the role that translation companies can play in making this easier. Using these services are inexpensive and make these hurdles so much more straightforward."
Christian called for the government to make allowances for small to medium businesses on VAT. At present, they have to pay immediately, but may have to wait two to three months to collect the money from clients, potentially creating cash flow issues.
He also welcomed the government's commitment to cutting red tape. Bidding for public sector work could be streamlined, with the amount of required documentation reduced.
