Life Sciences Case Study No.1

Our client is an international healthcare company which has been active in the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of novel healthcare solutions for over 100 years.

We were initially approached by the company in 2003 regarding the translation of their Summaries of Product Characteristics (SPCs). Our translators were required to work with language templates in Word format approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA). The EMEA is responsible for the scientific evaluation of applications for European marketing authorisation for medicinal products in all 23 of the EU languages:

Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Irish (Gaelic), Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish, Swedish

The first step for Lingo24 was to select appropriate in-country translators and proofreaders with extensive experience in Pharma as the translations had to be 100% accurate. It was equally very important that the translators supplied the translations using the language templates already approved by the EMEA. These contained pre-translated headers which couldn't be modified and our translators' instructions were to only translate the body text of the English template and supply this in their pre-approved language template.

Once the templates had all been translated and proofread, they were returned to our client, who sent them back to the EMEA for approval.

A week later we received all language templates back from our client with tracked changes and comments to be implemented in each language template within a strict time period. In addition, tracked changes had been made to the original English template and these also had to be implemented in all the language templates using tracked changes. The language templates were finally approved by the highly demanding professionals at the EMEA.

Each time that our client or any Life Sciences client has a new product, this procedure has to be followed. Now that there are 23 official EU languages it can be a lengthy process from initial translation through to final approval by the EMEA - but it's one we've become adept at helping clients through.

Life Sciences Case Study No.2

Our client is an international pharmaceutical company with offices in the US, Canada, UK and Switzerland. The company is focused on addressing the needs of individuals with less common diseases through the identification, development and commercialisation of existing medicines for new indications.

Their UK division first approached us in early 2005 regarding the translation of almost 30,000 words in PowerPoint format to be translated into French, German, Spanish and Italian. Since then we have handled multiple projects into the above four languages and a total to date of about 200,000 words! The subject matter is mainly descriptions of drugs and reports on patients' reactions to the drugs; use of certain drugs in certain diseases and results. Source files are mainly in PowerPoint and Word and require highly qualified and experienced translators as well as proofreaders in this particular field.

We have a dedicated Project Manager and translation team working with clients like the ones mentioned above which ensures consistency and accuracy on these translation projects in the Life Sciences field.
