Hashtags for the translation industry

Twitter is a wonderful tool for anyone in the translation industry. Whether it’s connecting with translators, translation buyers, translation agencies or other experts in the industry, there’s a heck of a lot you can get out of those 140 characters.
One great way to make the most out of Twitter is to use hashtags. For the uninitiated, hashtags are a handy way of categorising your Tweets. Let’s take a look:

Reducing translation costs without the need for Google Translate

Reducing translation costs is a hot topic for businesses small and large. In the past many have turned to good old Google Translate for help, which, while it certainly does aid in reducing translation costs, is also pretty inaccurate.
Nevertheless, web developers were outraged when Google reported its free API was being discontinued. The very same web developers can therefore not be totally surprised at the announcement that the API is back, in a paid-for service.

Edinburgh-based dating agency, Cupid, has seized the golden opportunity that the foreign language internet has to offer in the ever-growing Brazilian online market, shelling out a whopping half a million pounds for a number of Portuguese sites.

Swiss Franc could hold the power for e-tailers

It’s been a fragile month already for economies all over the globe.
But for some on the Continent, the answer could well lie in the power of the strong Swiss Franc. With the Swiss Franc at a record high, frugal locals are abandoning native shops and heading elsewhere for their wares. Germany is a favourite shopping destination for the Swiss at the moment, with the Euro giving them far more bang for their buck (or indeed, Swiss Franc).

Language fan has surgery to help her speak better Korean

Here at Lingo24, our slogan is ‘Love Your Language’, and this shines through, whether it’s in our translations or here on this very blog. But we discovered someone who’s taken her love of the Korean language to the next level, by having oral surgery to help her speak it better!
Nineteen-year-old student, Rhiannon Brooksbank-Jones, was so disappointed at not being able to pronounce vital letters of the Korean alphabet owing to her short tongue, that she went under the knife to lengthen it.

Closing the export gap with the foreign language internet

A whopping two-thirds of London’s businesses are not exporting, and very few would consider going overseas, a new report has said.
The poll, conducted by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said it was ‘hugely disappointed’ with the results.
Willie Walsh, president of the LCCI said, ‘It is not good enough that so few UK companies export their goods and services and even [fewer] think it’s a possibility.’

Welsh Assembly slammed for using Google Translate

The Welsh Assembly got itself into hot water this week after admitting it used Google Translate to translate assembly proceedings.
The move has sparked outrage from cross Welsh translators, branding it ‘ridiculous’.
A recent report stated a 5000-word passage (known as a ‘cofnod’) was copied into Google Translate and was ‘quality assured’ by a member of staff as part of a pilot project.

John Lewis goes global with international marketing

It’s a buyer’s paradise for the affluent English middle classes, and now department store, John Lewis, is going global.
The company aims to use the foreign language internet to entice those from overseas by implementing a massive global marketing strategy. Already trading in Western Europe, deliveries will be expanding into the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore by the end of the summer.

Chinese search engine Baidu announces 95% surge in profit

Chinese search engine giant, Baidu, has reported a 95% surge in profits over the last quarter.
The company said it made 1.63bn yuan (£155m) in the second quarter, compared to its profit of 837m yuan in the same period last year.
Baidu’s success rides on the back of the fact that it’s the number one search engine in China, beating Google with its mammoth 75% market share.

There was a really great article on the BBC last week about how spelling mistakes on ecommerce sites can slash revenue in half.
Fair enough, it wasn’t exactly a highly scientific experiment (it was one businessperson modifying his site and interpreting his results which then made it to a press release…) but it was interesting nonetheless.

Burberry tops the FTSE 100 with help from the foreign language internet

It’s famed for its tartan print and posh umbrellas, but international fashion retailer Burberry held the accolade of being the best performer in the FTSE 100 yesterday.
Its success has been attributed to its recent growth in the Middle East and China, which saw the Burberry website translated and localised for these audiences. It’s a move which has certainly paid off, with the company reporting a rise in Asia-Pacific sales by 60% in the last quarter alone.
