Why app developers need to start thinking global

App designers are becoming increasingly fearful to release in the USA following a spate of patent lawsuits.
A recent blog on the Guardian’s Apps Blog has highlighted the rising trend for US software patent owners to try and boost their incomes by suing developers over potential patent infringements.
It’s affecting developers across all smartphone platforms, and the big guns—Apple, Google and Microsoft—can do nothing to help. UK developer, Simon Maddox, told the Guardian, that it’s now ‘far too dangerous to do business’ in the USA.
While it’s a sad sign of the times for those developers who haven’t got top legal teams, there seems a logical solution for those who don’t want to dip their cyber-toes in American waters.
With rising numbers of multilingual users now taking to mobile devices, it would pay for app developers to really start going global by launching in multiple languages in app stores across the world.
Not only is it simple and relatively inexpensive to do, but by appealing to customers in their own language, it’s much easier to get noticed in a sea of English-speaking apps.
And this means more downloads, more revenue and far fewer American lawsuits.
Win-win!
