A whopping two-thirds of London’s businesses are not exporting, and very few would consider going overseas, a new report has said.
The poll, conducted by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) said it was ‘hugely disappointed’ with the results.
Willie Walsh, president of the LCCI said, ‘It is not good enough that so few UK companies export their goods and services and even [fewer] think it’s a possibility.’

Ecommerce retailers need to get their content right

There was a really great article on the BBC last week about how spelling mistakes on ecommerce sites can slash revenue in half.
Fair enough, it wasn’t exactly a highly scientific experiment (it was one businessperson modifying his site and interpreting his results which then made it to a press release…) but it was interesting nonetheless.

It’s famed for its tartan print and posh umbrellas, but international fashion retailer Burberry held the accolade of being the best performer in the FTSE 100 yesterday.
Its success has been attributed to its recent growth in the Middle East and China, which saw the Burberry website translated and localised for these audiences. It’s a move which has certainly paid off, with the company reporting a rise in Asia-Pacific sales by 60% in the last quarter alone.

Over a third of UK exporters have experienced ’significant’ growth since branching out overseas.
The figures come as part of a number of reports by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) into how British SMEs trade abroad and are a great boost, especially in the face of recent statistics suggesting that Britain is ailing as an exporting nation.

English-speaking Facebook users decline

It seems people are getting bored of virtually poking each other, as Facebook user numbers in the US and the UK fell last month.
According to data by Inside Facebook, the US lost about 6 million users in May, while around 100,000 Brits also deserted the site.
But this doesn’t mean Zuckerberg and Co. will soon be jumping ship—while English-speaking user numbers fell, foreign language users continued to rise.

How can the EU Commission get businesses to trade internationally?
posted Wed, 2011-06-08 14:27 by
Only 8.8% of EU citizens are buying online across EU borders, according to the folk at the EU Commission’s Digital Agenda Strategy (DAS). Not the best news for them, considering the figure they’re aiming for by 2015 is an ambitious 20%.
In fact, the news is so worrying, it’s prompted action from the EU Commission to tackle what it has described as ‘insufficient progress’.

All we hear is Radio Lingo

A couple of weeks ago, Lingo24’s MD, Christian Arno, graced the airwaves on BBC Radio 4’s ‘You and Yours’ programme to chat about the foreign language internet.
It was a great opportunity to spread the message far and wide about how businesses can appeal to their multilingual audience by adopting non-English websites.
