Lingo24, technology…and the Industry Standard

VentureBeat – the highly-respected US-based business and entrepreneurial website – has enlisted the expertise of Lingo24’s Christian Arno, in a feature on how entrepreneurs can use the internet to cost-effectively grow their business abroad. The full piece can be read here: Cashing in on non-English search engines.

Handy Hints: Google

posted by

Google is such a widely used search tool, that the word itself has gone from being a simple trademarked name to being an active verb – sometimes even appearing in lower case, as in ‘I googled the answer’.

And it can be used to search for just about any piece of information imaginable. For Lingo24, we often need a quick answer to a simple question and Google works very nicely for us.

Translation Tangles

posted by

The importance of getting a translation 100% correct can never be over-stated. Even the slightest deviance from the original text can convey an entirely different message to the one that was intended; and this only serves to underline the value of sourcing good quality, professional translators.

But what about translations that are 100% wrong? Well, besides the embarrassment suffered by the parties involved and the bemusement/amusement of those looking on, the main thing it reveals is that they have simply cut corners and haven’t bothered to do their foreign language homework.

Embracing the global market

Nobody could ever say the current economic downturn is a good thing. But if we’re to take a positive from a negative, then one could argue that it has given many businesses the proverbial kick up the backside they needed to get their house in order.

Money can no longer be thrown around like confetti and every penny must be accounted for - but growth is still an option during the global recession.

Lingo24 go Radio Ga Ga

The snowball effect of Lingo24’s recent media coverage has been fascinating to watch. Our recent appearance in the Sunday Times' ‘How I made it’ section was picked up on by Freelance UK, because of our strong links with the freelance fraternity.

Whilst technology is playing an increasingly important part in the modern day business world, it’s the people at the heart of each company that really make the difference.

New office for Lingo24 in Panama

We recently reported on this fair blog that Lingo24 was soon to be launching a fantastic new office complex in Timisoara, our European heartbeat in Romania – so that we could have everyone under one roof again. Well, due to our recent growth spurt, we’ve now out-grown our office in Panama too!

Most news is good news for Lingo24…

They say that no news is good news, but that’s not always the case. Lingo24 has been receiving some fantastic coverage lately and, following on from recent features in the Press and Journal, the Financial Times, the Edinburgh Evening News and the Brand Republic, the Sunday Times did a little feature on us at the weekend too.

Lingo at the Races

posted by

Lingo24 has teamed up with soapboxracing.co.uk for an extreme gravity racing event, set to take place on the longest and most testing course in Britain on the weekend of the 25th and 26th July. As official supporters of the event, Lingo24 has translated sections of the website into Gaelic.

And for those wondering what a ‘jessie’ is after reading the text on the homepage, it’s a Scottish colloquialism for a feeble, easily scared person.

Lingo24’s ‘Lingo-plex’

posted by

As one of the world’s most profitable companies, it’s hardly surprising that Google has a pretty impressive office environment for its staff to enjoy.

The Googleplex - located in Santa Clara County, California – boasts swimming pools, fountains, volleyball courts, slides and a replica of Space Ship One. And as if that wasn’t enough, it even has a full size dinosaur skeleton as part of its decor!

Of course, even Lingo24 would struggle to match that. But that’s not stopping us from launching our very own ‘Lingo-plex’ in our main operational hub in Timisoara, Romania.

Europe Day, Independence Day…what a day!

posted by

As if you didn’t know already, Saturday 9th May was Europe Day - an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe.

It was on that day in 1950 that marked the first move towards what we now call the European Union, which today has five hundred million people living in twenty seven member states. That’s a lot of people and, of course, a lot of languages.

A million words and counting…

Although Mandarin is the world’s number one language in terms of the number of native language speakers (almost 900 million, incidentally...), English is the most widely spoken language in terms of the number of overall speakers, estimated to be somewhere in the region of 1.5 billion people.

New curriculum for excellence is…excellent!

The UK has long had a reputation as being rather ‘mono-lingual’ when it comes to communicating on holiday. Indeed, ordering ‘dos cervezas’ on a Spanish break in the sun is possibly as much as many UK holidaymakers could manage.

However, it’s important not to get hooked in by these well-worn stereotypes, and there are many people who are more than willing to try their hand at another language when abroad. The problem is, as English speakers it’s so easy to become a little lazy when our native tongue is so widely spoken – English has become the international language of convenience.

SEO is key to localising in emerging markets

posted by

At a time when many businesses may be trying to protect what they have and limit any perceived ‘unnecessary’ spending, there is actually a strong case for taking a different approach by boldly seeking out new opportunities in untapped ‘emerging’ markets.

The majority of the internet is written in English; however, the majority of the internet community’s first language isn’t English, which means there is a clear gap there that many businesses could be using to their benefit.

Stay in the green and out of the red

With the advent of the internet era and general technological advances, the translation industry is able to lead the way as a genuine green industry.

Translations covering every language combination can be transported by email, FTP or any other digital means imaginable, meaning no paper is needed no carbon-emitting vehicles are required for its export either.

The value of word-of-mouth marketing

posted by

The importance of good customer service in the modern business world can’t be overstated. With the advent of the internet era and healthy competition existing in most industry sectors, it has never been easier for a customer to change their particular service provider - so the need to provide genuinely good customer care is of paramount importance.

Lingo24: Speaking the Language of Business

posted by

Any company that is truly global will communicate with its international clients in their own tongue - as far as is feasible.

Moreover, for a translation company, it’s probably fair to say that it’s even more important that we are able to communicate professionally in a number of languages. Indeed, one of the main reasons we chose to open offices in Panama and Timisoara (Romania) is because of the skill-sets in these two particular locations – chiefly, they are very multilingual places.

Questions are the answers for Christian Arno

posted by

As the old idiom goes, there’s no such thing as a silly question; asking questions is how we discover new information and learn more about the world we live in.

And Christian Arno, Lingo24’s founder and Managing Director, was on hand recently to answer some probing questions for the Edinburgh Evening News.

From his earliest memories of school and his most embarrassing moment (a ‘self-styled haircut’, incidentally...) to his key sporting interests and his greatest achievement with Lingo24, Christian gave a good account of where he’s from, what he likes and, well, what he’s like.
