At times, we all have to ‘make do’; times of shortage are a classic example of an occasion when this is certainly the case and judging by the sound of reports from the Nebraska Supreme Court, it seems that times like these have definitely befallen the Nebraska Judiciary. In this particular case, the shortage is of Certified Court Interpreters and the remedy has been to use non-certified interpreters for the role, in fact, almost 60% of interpretation work carried out in Nebraska courts in 2007 was carried out by such non-certified interpreters.

The Nordic countries have always operated in a very close spirit of co-operation and mutual assistance and the modern day manifestation of this is the Nordic Council. The Nordic Council is a forum for cross-Nordic co-operation encompassing almost every sphere of socio-economic overlap between member countries and is made up of representatives from member Parliaments; in fact it operates in a somewhat similar way to the EU (except that it doesn’t meddle, seek dictatorial powers over member States and genuinely has the interests of members at heart).

In a recent round of fundraising, the widely known news sharing site Digg, has managed to raise a massive $29 million to fund its future expansion…the actual sum is $28.7 million (but what’s the odd 300,000 between friends). This is actually no mean feat in the current atmosphere of restricted credit and certainly reflects private equity firms’ confidence in the company’s future.

The EU has threatened The Irish Government with legal action in Europe’s highest court, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg over an alleged irregularity over the award of a multi million Euro interpreting contract to the US translation company Lionbridge Language Services.

The EU has proposed a plan to link the National Criminal Databases of all 27 EU member countries into a single all encompassing database that would be accessible by Police and Judicial Agencies in each of the member States. The proposed system is meant to address the current shortfall in information across Criminal Justice systems where a judge in one country would currently in all likelihood, be unaware of a person’s criminal activity in other member States.

Yesterday we reported on the worldwide project by Jewish organisations to achieve multiple complete translations of the Tanach by encouraging volunteers worldwide to translate one line each of the Tanach into their native languages. Today we can report that Iran has released what is considered the largest religious text multimedia project in its field.

The Jewish community in Zhitomir, Ukraine has just inaugurated the Ukrainian portion of part of a world initiative that aims to have every volunteering participant (this includes non-Jews) write one line of the Tanach in their native language; in this way it is hoped that the initiative will produce many complete translations of the holy books in many different languages and ‘spread love for the scriptures worldwide’. Each participant is to receive a special certificate for their efforts.

The popularity of literary classics has received a huge boost in Japan in the past couple of years with the publication of a Japanese version of Dostoyevsky’s final and largest work, The Brothers Karamazov. The published corpus consisted of five volumes translated by Ikuo Kameyama, president of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies; the first of these was released in 2006 with the final volume being released in July of last year.

It had previously been reported within these pages that journalist and television presenter Ahmed Zalami had caused some amount of controversy in his native Afghanistan with his dissemination of a translation of the Koran into Dari; Dari being the native Afghan dialect of the Farsi (Persian) language.

We all tend to think that we are stretched sometimes, particularly when a large translation project lands in our laps, but maybe we should just be grateful that we are not one of the staff or lay translators employed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (more commonly known to many as The Mormons).
