Arabic translators in the US Army

The US Army recruits mainly domestic translators for Arabic and other critical foreign languages via special recruitment operations which began in 2003. The early requirements for translators failed to be met (for 85 Arabic translator positions, only 58 applicants were successful), however the figures started to improve over time: in 2004, 221 Arabic translators were hired for 250 openings, whilst in 2007 all 250 positions were filled.

New Swedish language protection law discussed

The Swedish government is reviewing a draft bill that would guarantee protection for Swedish, in both Sweden and abroad. This law is meant to affirm the status of Swedish as a first language and to ensure access to language education for all those living in Sweden.

Sweden is, along with The Netherlands, one of the hubs of English-speaking communities in Europe. It is one of those places where almost anyone you meet will speak excellent English. But this bilingualism seems to trouble some decision-makers in Sweden, as they note that Sweden risks losing ground, especially in scientific fields. Read the rest of this entry »
