SDL acquisition of Trados under investigation
Belated by 6 months, the US Department of Justice decided to investigate the “merger” as part of which SDL International bought Trados. According to Mr Lancaster, the CEO of SDL, he wasn’t aware of the investigation - and actually the delay suggests that it is not really a high priority with the Department.
What I find interesting that there is no mentioning of the other big acquisition (Lionbridge’s acquisition of Bowne Global) seems to have gone without investigation (though I simply might have missed it).
This all fuels the ongoing discussion if it is a good idea to buy translation services from a company that also sells the market leading translation tool. I am still not sure what I think about it - but there are truckloads of issues. So until I know what I think, I’d recommend to go with a company that can deliver the best workflow - independent of what they want to sell you.
